Yes indeed, this has been coming for some time.
For example, one tour operator in JFK was using World to provide weekly lift to Africa. They were told a month ago that the MD11 would no longer be available as of early February.
A good opportunity for others.........:D

Interesting. I always thought that it was the Civil Reserve Fleet that Earnest Gann flew for during WWII in his superb book "Fate is the Hunter"

The web site link provided by Paper Tiger states a start date of 1951, which is obviously after WWII.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Actually, CRAF did'nt exist in WW2. It was basically civil aircraft used by the Air Transport Command, or ATS, later Military ATS or 'MATS'.

Still, 78 civil wide-body jets is quite a bit of lift to supplement C-5s, 141s and KC-10s.
