Ive gained my PPL and night rating. What is the best route to a career in aviation from here? Should I do the IMC rating first and then hour build, or hour build and then the IMC and ATPL ground exams??

I would suggest do the IMC first. Then you will have greater flexibility about when you can fly and where you can go on your hour building flights. If you are limited to basic PPL privileges you might find you are cancelling a lot of trips.
As someone else has said elsewhere: Make sure your hour-building trips are interesting. Go to lots of airports and abroad rather that 150 hours of 'local' flying. Not only will it look better in your logbook but it will give you extra experience of communicating with ATC and navigation etc. and increase your confidence.
On the subject of navigation, I would also urge you to do a proper job of VFR /IFR nav rather than leaping in the a/c and pushing GOTO on the GPS. In addition, make sure you can fly height and heading to within +/-100ft /10 degrees without thinking about it. If you don't, you will be working hard when you come to do your CPL training and IR training. Its been recommended that a few more hours be gained before moving on to the IMC rating. I can understand why too! The basics have to be sound first, before moving on!!
However, the IMC rating may save my life one day, wouldn't it be wise to start it straight away ASAP?? I guess the more you fly the bigger the prob of running into cloud and being caught off-guard etc!!
