Guys and Girls,

Have just received an e-mail regarding a 1st stage interview with Easterns (QantasLink). I'm after any information regarding what to expect in the interview process. I've been told 1st stage is the same as 1st stage Qantas. Any books i should study or any advice in general would be greatly appreciated.

Also what can one expect at futher interviews.

Cheers

You'll do the same stage 1 as regular QF applicants. At that point in time, if you are successful you will be bought back for stage 2.

This consists of a basic sim ride which lasts about an hour including briefing/discussion, then a panel interview with 2 members. Usually 1 Management and 1 pilot. This lasts around 45 minutes.

You will be advised of your result within a couple of weeks of attending stage 2.

On some very rare occasion you might be called back for an interview with the Chief Pilot or other Management pilot.

As far as prep goes: Take a look on the QF website under pilot recruitment. There are a few examples of what to expect. If you want to speed the thought processes up you could have a play around with some of the Mensa I.Q. books available in any bookstore.

You'll be sent some pre-reading material for the sim. I strongly recommend going and getting up to speed on the approaches you will fly. Spend a few buck$ and do an hour or two practice in a simulator that operates in the same speed range (Cat B). Look for one with the most basic IFR instrument setup you can find....

Good luck!

Jarse,
I wasnt sent any pre-reading material, when I went that was in Sept 2001 .

I only went with others told me. Which I know is suppose to be confidential, but I got as much info from others as I could.

Did my stage one QF stuff then 2 days later did the sim then the Interview. Didnt make it, but have renewed my app , and got some Airline Experience, might make a diff now.

Gidday Sheep Guts,
The whole process was reviewed around that time (which was a fairly busy time, interview-wise).

Successful stage 1 applicants are now sent some notes (in a similar vein to those doing a QF sim ride), listing configurations and the approaches that will be covered. Finer detail is covered in the briefing.

The Company knows that candidates would have done the grape vine thing. It's normal behaviour IMHO.

Regards.

In addition to Hugh Arse's valuable information.

If you use Jeppesen study the Terminal section for the Simulator.

For the interview go over the Air Traffic Control section, areas such as alternate requirements, visual approaches etc. The other technical questions can really vary from explaining the weather from a MSL analysis chart, to talking your way through the cross-section of a engine, to what is your understanding of CRM etc.

I'm sure you will be 'up to speed' on all of this, if not back to the books ;)

Best wishes, hoss :D

If youve already done the QF Psych & Skills, do you have to do it again with Eastern/Sunnies ?!

661,
It depends on how long ago you did it as there is a time limit on the validity of the P&S for all airlines within the group. I think 18 months to 2 years. Can't remember............

Assuming you are "current" it then depends on what your overall grade was.

Therefore, if you're "current", and your overall grade is above the minimum required for Eastern, then you won't need to do the P&S again. You will need to do a sim and interview however.

Hit the books :D

i did the psyche and aptitude for eastern in nov 2002 and a week later go a letter saying "you have been unsucessful.........may re-apply after 2004 etc, is this just a nice way of saying thanks but no thanks or do they really give you another go, and is it possible to re-apply before the the 2yrs period. Could it also be my lack of experience..1600hrs

Jk44,
if you were unsuccessful at the P+S then that means you missed the cutoff score.

Yes, they will reconsider you in the timeframe given, but I strongly recommend you get in and do some preparation before the day.

Take a look on the QF website as the test for them and Eastern is the same. You will find examples of some of the content you might expect on that site. If you've done it the first time, then you know what to expect.

I'd have a crack at some of the IQ books put out by the Mensa Foundation as a starting point. You can find those in newsagents Australia wide.

Exercise your brain. You'd be surprised what a difference it makes on the day.

How do you guys get an interview? Do you still ring and hassle week in week out or are just plucked from staffcv? Have had applications in for over a year but nothing and just the standard fob off on the phone! Any info appreciated.

I know 6 guys with good time all on turbines and some with Dash8 time all didn't get through the Phy/App. I don't think its exercising the brain Hugh Arse, because I know guys who where far from astronauts and got in with no study or prep.I think its who u know oR $165 thanks for cominnn!

Read my last post kava_crew. If you don't make the cutoff score in the P&S, then you don't get called back for stage 2.

It has nothing to do with 'who you know'. I've had a few friends go through and miss out on P&S. That's as far as you go, no matter how good a bloke/girl/pilot you are, or who you know.

All apps go through staffcv, which (unfortunately) is faceless until such time you receive the call from C.D. to come in.

If you get to stage 2 and have named a current employee as a reference, it will be checked as will all the others.

Good luck to all of you.
