View Full Version : Cessna or Piper for CPL test?

G'day all,
Just one questions to all who has flown both:
What type Cessna-172 or Piper-28 ( firstly basic then CSU) would you prefer for training and CPL flight test considering any points: rental rates (average), flight performance, stability and easiness of control, following IR requirement, the next most appropriate ME type..........?

Any points will be appreciated

I dont think that you would be able to beat the good old 182 (whether it be 182 or 182R). I think that you should be looking for a school that you will be able to do your flying in the 182. I would rather the 182 over the 172 ... the reasons are endless ...


I personally think that it is one of the better aircraft to get experience on and, if you are lucky enough to get a chance of a job, there is a good chance of it being on a 182 or 206 .... both fairly similar

I was under the impression that the a/c you sit your cpl in must TAS over 125kts. I could've changed but I don't think it has. Looking more at a c182 or pa-28-200

Would recommend doing initial training in say a PA28, then moving to a 172 for PPL, then a 182 is a good move as chances are you will score a job on 182/206/210 if you go out bush.

It helps being familiar with the type. Some operators want "high wing" time. Beats me why, but if the CP want it, you aint gunna get a job without it!

Which ever type you feel the most comfortable in AND perform the best.

I'd suggest you minimise swapping around to a minimum ie once you change onto a type stay on it. That way you will feel more at home in it.

Some people swear by Piper, others Cessna etc.

I prefer Cessna but that reflects my own bias & experience.


As long as it meets the test criteria it matters little.

If you can get a retractable for the same cost as a fixed gear then that might be something to consider. You will eventually need the endorsement so if you can get it for no extra during training...

I would go the C182 if possible having some time in it. may lead to Meat Bombing or Station work later.

As for mixing types thats ok aswell, makes you more versatile.

I used to work at a Company in Darwin where one day youd do the Mail Run in C206 then the next was an all day charter in a PA-31-350 , then the next a Freight Run in C402B ,then the next day a all day wait at Port Keats in a Baron, then finish the week off in C210 or C310R. You got busy. Made me more versatile I believe. Got to know your numbers though and A/C limitations.:D

There is a requirement to have a TAS of 120 and must have a constant speed prop...

Go the C182...

i thought the requirement was more like the aircraft must be able to be flown at 120kts in accordance with configuration specified in the flight manual.

which means you could do the whole thing in a plane that flys around below 120kts, as long as the plane is capable of 120kts in S & L flight

I thought it had to be a 120kn cruise and have a CSU, blows both of those out I would have thought!

You can do ALL your training in a C152 if you want - but the TEST must be in a 'High Performance' type, which is defined as CSU + 120kt cruise TAS.

For my bit, did GFPT in C152, all my PPL in C172, then some time in PA28, then some more C172 for the CPL, then some PA28R for the navs et al, then PN68 for the MECIR, then 1st job in a C182, then some PAY3 for the turbine / pressurisation thing + some ICUS, then more C182, then some day work in a PA34, then the Aztec for ME IFR CHTR.

End result - wish I'd done it ALL in a twin. Horses for courses butch; make up your own mind, but be very clear on your AC type numbers and procedures when time comes for the CPL test. The C182 is very hard to beat for cost/benefit.

get your PPL and then go fly a Duchess. slow as a wet week, but the numbers get bigger in the twin command column.

probably close to the same price as a mickey mouse 182 as well. :)

Just to clarify the reason why I posted this question overhere.
I am not starting from scratch. I have about 2000 tt, OS ATPL, but no aussi recognized a/c (type or class) endorsment and is about to try for OS licence conversion for migration purpose. Some schools propose Cessna , other Piper, and I would like to hear your opinions coz I cant see the difference at the moment as I've never flown them both, but should make a choise in near future.
In any case thank all for replies.

Fly whatever your happiest in, as long as it has a CSU and is capable of +120knts......they are all the same, they go up when you pull the thingy and go down when you push the thingy. I would suspect the people telling you to use Piper, have pipers on line and ditto cessnas.
Just dont use them arrogant french thingys, coz they dont obey the normal laws of physics....... do they Nappy??? :D

We all managed to inhale all the helium in the decorations at a certain event last year and I believe nappy even had a go at it........musta got hooked. :D

Daisy is going with a vengance....she's a little rippa. If ya go to the PNG bash thread in BASHES, there is a link there to some photos of her in action. Taken from Nappys tobogan :D I know he hates it when you call it one of them, but it did manageto keep up at low power settings and he did a top job of not killing us.;)
