Just to let you all know United have just changed their upgrade policy from business to first. They will not offer any mileage plus miles upgrade from a discounted business class fare (D) to first, it is only available from a standard (C) fare. I flew back from ORD at the weekend and was offered an upgrade from D because they were full in business to first for 30,000 miles (triple the normal amount), I stayed in business not worth the upgrade at that rate. Even so it always worth asking at the gate politely you never know.
Also as an aside I made the mistake of asking for another piece of cheese after dinner on my outward sector to SFO and recieved the reply of "sorry, there is not enough to go round - the good times are over now honey!"
