The following is a link to the CAA's statistics, the full year for 2002 won't be out for a while so you could check out the latest full month's data - namely Oct 2002.

Unfortunately the file names are not very helpful but you should be able to find the passenger numbers download the data into Excel to sort by total.

Good luck

I think you will find that GLA is well ahead of EDI :)

Different measures will show different results. In 2001 for example......

Top 10 airports for International Charter pax

LGW 11,027,938
MAN 9,613,902
BHX 2,823,028
GLA 2,012,643
EMA 1,587,253
NCL 1,536,453
LTN 1,370,474
BRS 1,196,382
STN 1,075,501
CWL 979,749

whereas the top 10 airports for International scheduled pax looks quite different

LHR 53,691,308
LGW 17,034,349
STN 10,466,165
MAN 6,600,391
BHX 3,674,545
LTN 3,377,633
GLA 1,358,177
EDI 1,349,899
LPL 1,332,804
LCY 1,167,624

No doubt Domestic routes would look different again as would a list complied in summer months vs winter etc etc

Haven't seen OUR figures yet ...but both BFS and bhd are in the UK!!!!! .... and BFS reckon on at least 4,000,000 pax (mostly domestic I reckon) this year ..should raise us up the list a shade...at least above Cardiff Bristol maybe Leeds and Liverpool?

>>I think you will find that GLA is well ahead of EDI <<

800.00 pax ahead at end of 2002 but the lead is being cut
every month. EDI should overtake GLA by late 2004, early
2005 on present 'form'.

In fact both airports will be in the 7,000,000 million pax+ brackets around May/June this year.

A 'form' that is remarkable given EDI has a smaller % of
Scottish charters and very little transatlantic traffic.

EDI already has the biggest percentage of domestic and
scheduled EU international pax.

EDI also looks like holding the busiest Scottish airport title
at least six/seven months out of twelve - I would not describe that as GLA being well ahead of EDI.

Regular spreadsheets are posted each month in the free.uk.airports.edinburgh-binaries newsgroup for those
interested in CAA/BAA figures.

Interesting points Joe.

You should really try and get in touch with another EDI enthusiast, who coincidentally is also called Joe Curry, who for years has been lambasting the owners of EDI, claiming they are involved in a conspiracy against the airport and are purposefully mismanaging it for the benefit of GLA.

With such opposing views, I'm sure you'd enjoy an interesting debate!

I don't see any long-haul or extensive charter traffic at EDI.
I don't see full length taxiways...multi-storey car park...
International Pier..the ATC is tower is 30 years behind schedule.

The new terminal at EDI will reach it's 7.5M design capacity
this year and I don't see any plans for terminal expansion.

I do see BAA allocating a further £200M on terminal expansion
at GLA - the design capacity of the present one is 8.5M and
that figure will not be reached until 2004 'maybe'.

Flying from EDI is a licence to print money but BAA cannot see
the wood for the trees.

Will Health and Safety and Fire regulations force BAA's hand
into parting with money at EDI or will the CAA be forced to consider BAA's licence.?

Stansted is the third largest in terms of the number of aircraft movements. We are however (as shown above) 4th in terms of passenger numbers, the reason being that we have lower capacity aircraft than MAN.
