China's aircops take off

More than 2 000 members of a new Chinese air police force will begin boarding Chinese airline flights this year to protect them from terrorism and other attacks, state media said this week.

Each flight will have two policemen in uniform and the policemen will be "lightly armed," the China Daily said.

The move comes shortly after the government revealed that a fatal air crash earlier last year was caused by a cancer-suffering passenger who deliberately started a fire in an apparent suicide attempt so his family could cash in on the flight insurance he bought before boarding the plane.

"This is a move aimed at fighting terrorism and improving the sense of safety of passengers," Zhong Qunpeng, an aviation safety expert, told the China Daily last month when the decision was first announced.

The first teams of air police - who must be "quick-witted, brave and strong" - will be recruited from airline security crew members and will undergo special training, the paper said.

China said it would put security guards on flights in 2001 following the September 11 suicide attacks on the United States, and later announced the first officers would be in place by summer 2002.

Despite the delay, aviation officials are now speeding up their plans, partly influenced by the revelation that the crash of a China Northern Airlines plane that killed 103 passengers and nine crew members in May was caused deliberately. - Sapa-AFP
