View Full Version : Incorrect jumpering or rogue CPU?
I have just built a new system using a Gigabyte GA7AVXP motherboard with an Athlon XP2100+ and 512 Mb of PC2700 SDRAM, running XP Pro, however on firing it up the processor is being identified as an XP 1500+, running at 1.31 Ghz rather than the expected 1.73 Ghz for the 2100+. Can this be caused by e.g. incorrect jumpering on the motherboard or is the processor in fact a 1500+ in the wrong box?

If the processor identifies itself as a 1500+ on bootup, you should contact your retailer. Regardless of jumpering, the PCU ID should be correct. You might want to check on the PCU itself, if you can still acess it without too much trouble.
Unfortunately can't see the label any more but I do seem to remember that it said 2100+ before I bunged the heatsink on. However am I right in thinking that the CPU clock speed is 100 MHz up to about XP1700+ or 1800+ and 133 MHz above that? I thought it strange that it wouldn't even power up when I'd got it set for 133MHz and it wasn't until I rejumpered it for 100 MHz that it worked at all.
Looks like it might have been a Friday afternoon job then.

... if the jumpers are set incorrectly to the genuine CPU speed, should'nt this throw an error message at boot?.. it did for me. (CPU mismatch error)..
Nope, wouldn't even fire up. Fans whizzed, beeps beeped, LEDs flashed, clicky things clicked, then the lights went out and it all went quiet again :eek: . OK now but not that much faster than my old machine.

According to the gigabyte website if you have a GA-7VAXP (is yours a typo as you say GA7AVXP) if you have a AMD AthlonXP 2100+ (Palamino) then the FSB should be 266 @ a ratio of 13 if you have a Thoroughbread it is set the same.
Definately not FSB of 100 or 133.

Thanks, Spanners, I was looking all over for that sort of info, but obviously in the wrong places. It was my typo but Palominos and Thoroughbreds are sweet mystery to me.
Interestingly though it does require the 133 Mhz speed setting after all, the only change I made was to force a >12.5 clock ratio rather than leave it on the automatic setting. This gives the correct 1.74 GHz processor frequency and 2100+ identifier and apparently operates over a 266 MHz FSB (I think this is something to do with the DDR RAM using the up and down sides of the clock pulse).
It's all runnung just dandy-o now and I await my new graphics card with baited breath....
