Using XP Pro on a Toshiba Satellite, lots of memory etc.

Problem:

Microphone is always live when plugged in causing feedback/squeal in speakers / headset.

Previously no problems.

Commenced shortly, but not necessarily immediately after installing Speech Recognition.

So far:

Speech Recognition un-installed. Still have the problem.

Any ideas on 'switches' etc appreciated.

Double click on the Volume control in the system tray.

This should bring up the audio mixer panel.

Mute any Microphone inputs in the Play properties.

You may have to mute it in the record Properties as well...Options/Properties/Recording...

Just reducing the input volume should be enough to stop the feedback. If you look at 'sounds & audio devices' in control panel and go to 'voice' then click 'test hardware', it takes you through the volume setting process.

Thanks Guys,

DB6: Already tried that one, didn't solve the prob.

Agent86: Already tried that too. Then the penny dropped !!!

I had thought that turning off the mike would mean the programs that use it wouldn't be able to.

Of couse I hadn't taken the Microsoft comprehension course.

The programs that need it simply turn it on again. (And so far, off when finished)

So, problem solved. :) :) :)

Again, thanks guys,

Aha! Very useful anyway as I have precisely the same laptop and OS and have just bought a webcam and mike so will probably see the same thing in due course.
