Rescue personnel have recovered two bodies after a plane went down in heavy mist in the Ingeli mountains near Kokstad in the Free State, police said on Thursday.

Captain Ralph Ruiters said the plane was on its way from Durban to Port St Johns when it crashed. He said locals saw the plane flying near the mountains before they heard "a loud bang".

The bodies of a man and a woman, believed to be husband and wife, were found flung more than 30 metres away from the crash site.

Ruiters said the names of the couple would be withheld until their next-of-kin had been informed.

Rescue personnel were battling to get the bodies down from the area, which he described as inaccessible rocky terrain.

The crash site would be left as undisturbed as possible so that the Civil Aviation Authority could determine the cause of the crash, Ruiters said. - Sapa

Posted Fri, 27 Dec 2002

The bodies of two Swedish tourists whose plane went down in heavy mist in the Ingeli mountains near Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday will be removed by Friday, Umzimkulu police said.

The plane was on its way from Durban to Port St Johns when it crashed. Locals saw the plane flying near the mountains before they heard "a loud bang".

Superintendent Zandra Hechter said Ulf Ericson (52) and his wife Christina (53) were on holiday from Sweden. Their son is a resident of Centurion.

"The CAA will be going to the site this (Friday) morning to start their investigations, while police will remove the bodies and take them to the mortuary. After autopsies the bodies will be flown to Sweden," Hechter said.
