Five injured in light plane crash

Five men were injured when a light plane crashed on a Bass Strait island.

The Cessna 210 crashed into trees and apparently caught fire near the airstrip at Killiecrankie on Flinders Island, Ben Mitchell, of Australian Search and Rescue, said.

It crashed just after the pilot had aborted a landing on the strip.

Mr Mitchell said witnesses reported two of the men had severe burns and broken bones while the other three had less serious injuries.

He did not know where the plane, which had a pilot and four men on board, had come from or why the initial landing was aborted.

The crash happened adjacent to a grass strip near a homestead on the island's northwest.

Mr Mitchell said two air ambulances - from Essendon, in Victoria, and Launceston, in Tasmania - and a helicopter from Hobart were on the way.

Ambulances and a doctor from Whitemark, the main town on the island, were at the scene.

The five would be taken to Whitemark for treatment.

The two most seriously injured would be flown to a major hospital after being stabilised.
