Hi to all, especially ex-RAF guys who hold a class 1 medical; I have a problem.....

I have the A1 G1 Z1 med cat, and am thinking of coming out to train for an ATPL. But I can't apply for a certain sponsorship deal unless I get a class 1 which will set me back £400.

1. Can anyone tell me what do they do at Heathrow that OASC does not?

2. Are the CAA/JAA standards any higher or exacting than the RAF?

3. Is there any way for military pilots to get round the expense?

4. Would it be a worthwhile investment for future applications?

5. Should I splash out the cash in the vain hope of getting accepted for sponsorship?

Training,

Go and have a chat with your friendly local av med SMO - some MOs can issue Class 1 certs on the strength of your aircrew med.

If you have any doubts, get the medical at Gatwick. As far as I remember, the initial one must be done there, only renewals can be carried out by certain AMEs. Worth spending £400 now perhaps to avoid wasting 000s later.

Having said that, if you're A1G1Z1 then the chances are you'll pass the Class 1. I'm not medically trained by any means but I hope this is of some use.
