You guys might have seen my post in the FF forum but I need to know as well whether the Signapore (and Malaysia) civil aviation medical board accepts commercial pilots that have previously done laser eye surgery (Lasik) before?

If any of the airline pilots flying in both these countries can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks.

I had a medical just a couple of weeks ago with the Singapore CAAS Medical Board ( we have to do our medicals with them every two years, in case our friendly neighbourhood doctor is a bit too friendly ) and asked them whether it was permissable here to have the lasik surgery done. They told me that it was OK, and the only requirements were that you could not fly until the second checkup after the surgery ( about two weeks I understand ), and that an eye test would be compulsory every year after that.
Hope this helps, but I suggest you contact them yourself if you are serious about a job here.

Thanks SA,

I recently just came back from Singapore & Taipei. I called up Madora's office and the office said it was OK as well as long as I bring all the reports. I just want to make sure by getting a 2nd opinion.

So I guess in Singapore either the CAAS or the private assigned doctor does the flightcrew medical every year?

In Taipei, there is a 1 year waiting period and I am subject to more testings every 3 months.

Thanks again,

SB

Hi SA,

Just to enquire, what is the criteria for CAAS class 1 medical for eyesight requirements?

I have a friend who is currently in trouble perhaps due to his eyesight (6/60 unaided and 6/6 with correction) and could not proceed on with his SQ cadet pilot application as CAAS did not clear his medical due to the eyesight issue. He may face rejection from SIA. Is it advisable to ask my friend to go for Lasik to stand a better chance to get cleared by CAAS?

Also do you have any contacts for my friend to see a well-known eye specialist ( For Pilots ) in Singapore for a detailed eye examination and report to be submitted up to CAAS for further review and approval ?

Info very much appreciated !! Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but I don't know what the criteria is.
Dr Medora would be the best bet for that sort of info, as he seems to keep up to date on the requirements, and was once a member of the CAAS medical board himself I believe. His phone number is 62880035.
Cheers.

I was told by Eye Surgeon who did my sons Lasik that no one can tell that it had been done so maybe it would be better left unsaid??

That option has been considered before - unfortunately, in the aforementioned two yearly medical with the CAAS medical board, they physically check your glasses against the prescription on file. So, unless you are prepared to plead divine intervention, you could have some explaining to do!
