Lagos Any advice?

Hi everyone, my airline is just about to start a Lagos contract, and was wondering if their was anything I should be aware of before leaving.
I have some basic advice, like dont drink the water, watch what you eat, dont use your credit card and so on. But was wondering if anyone out their knows the place well, and can recommend anything for us guys who will be down their for 4 clear days sometimes. Been told not to leave the hotel, is it really that bad, as 4 days of doing nothing will send me crazy.
Any advice would be greatly recived.

It is a very dangerous place.

Airline crew have an armed escort from the airport to the hotel. It is certainly best not to leave the hotel.

Make sure your vaccinations are up to date and it is a good idea to take anti malaria tablets.

If you like sunbathing and having a "few" drinks then you will get something out of your stay there!

London-flyer, don't worry, it's not THAT bad. Agree though that it is dangerous and extreme caution should be excercised anywhere outside the hotel.

I've spent most of the last 18 months in LOS project managing the ongoing setup of a certain airline in country.

I'm guessing, but you'll probably be at the Sheraton in Ikeja? This is the only hotel airlines use that's near the airport. The other is on Victoria Island and I really hope you're not down there!

As per the last post, stock up on the sunscreen and get to know Frank and Marshall, the barmen in Goodies which is open until 0300 every night, with The Club open until 0400 Thurs, Fri and Sat.

Few top tips to go on with:

Obvious, I know, but only drink the bottled water.
Ice is OK in drinks, it's made from mineral water
Be prepared for Lagos-belly initially, but after a couple of trips you'll be fine.
Take anti-malarials but watch the amount of time you can take them over - usually max 6 months
The Sheraton linen and towels are fine. It's not necessary to take your own.
Don't go out of the hotel grounds, even just to see around the hotel.
There's a gym, so you can get super fit after the night before in Goodies!
Only use a hard case for luggage, zipped cases are great sport at Murtala Muhammed, and pilfering is rife.
And DON'T whatever you do get jiggy with the nightfighters! Everyone will know anyway as you have to register them in with security!

And when you're getting stir crazy, just remember the adage - Happiness in LOS is V1.:D

A couple of crew that I have been speaking with are talking about not taking any anti malaria tablets, which is common with crew, side affects and so on, was wondering if there was any reason to try and convince them that hear it may be different, and it really is required.:confused:

Sorry to be so blunt but IMHO it's the biggest dump on earth.
If you can avoid it do.

Personally I'd rather spend a week in a 6x6ft
locked room with my mother-in-law telling me about her ailments!!.:D :D

Good luck and take some good reading material, loads of
anti-mosi cream and some sleeping tablets and before you know it you'll be home.

Lagos is a high risk malaria area.

Although anti malaria tablets do have side effects and are not 100% effective, I would still strongly recommend taking them.

For those who are dead against taking the tablets, they should at the very least take a mosquito net and use some sort of spray that contains DEET.

Whoops. Problem. I am afraid one of the charms of the Lagos Island Hotels is the large number of lizzards frequenting your space. These are not just the little flattie geckos that keep your room mosquito free (plenty of those-please dont spray them), but the 5-7 inch multicolured lizards that scuttle about the pools,gardens and patios. They generally dont get into the rooms but are very much part of the very limited charm of the place.
They are not at all dangerous and wont come near you, but if you are lying there still and sunbathing they will scuttle about and around you.
Snakes - very rarely seen in the city. I think that any snake that puts its head up is promptly eaten.
Look out for the bar-b-q -d bush rats on sticks by the roadside!!
