Can anyone tell me what is the minimum license required (and how much it would cost you to get it in terms of number of hours required) before you can start to earn a living as a pilot?
I don't necessarily mean transporting paying passengers but maybe glider towing or crop spraying or whatever, is it a CPL or can it be anything less?
If it is a CPL what is the minimum hours needed to obtain one and what is the average cost of getting this license??

Please help, can't continue in current job much longer!!

Basic requirements:

PPL (45 hours) - £3000-5000

Hours build (about 100 hours)-£5000

CPL/ATPL written exams - minimum of £3000

CPL Course - £4000

These are rough figures and vary from school to school but that's the basic idea.

THTF,
Are you saying the EXAMS cost 3K, or the course..?

I'm not sure really. I think the exam fees themself are about £1500 and the cheapest course you can go on is about £1500 to £2000. I stand to be corrected though (does that make sense).

Most distance learning ATPL theory courses seem to be coming in at around £3,000, full-time a little more.

Exam entry fee is £718 for the 14 exams the first time round, resits are £37 per exam.

There you go - close enough.
