Photo Driving Licenses...Photo Flying Licenses????

I am just interested in seeing peoples views on the possible effects of introducing a flying license similiar to the new style driving license, with the photo on it...

I personally think they would be a great idea, as given the current state of affairs it would be so much harder for someone to hire/fly a plane who shouldnt be.

Other possible ideas could be to use a national computer to log flight times etc, so they have a history of your flying habits, now I know this may sound tedious but there might be some benefit to it???

Since the introduction of JAA licenses it has been a requirement to carry a photo id. No id and your license is not valid.

And if the UK introduced photo pilot licences, what's the bet that they wouldn't be valid unless you also carried a bulky paper version?

Reminiscent of the new-ish 'high tech' wallet friendly photocard driver's licence. The one that must be produced accompanied by an A4 size paper form or it's not valid... :rolleyes:

There is already a record of the flying habits for all of us - a personal log book. The CAA can see it any time they want to.

Who would monitor our flying habits and how would it help? I presume you mean for anti-terrorist reasons. I am uncertain how and what it would achieve. It would require a database of every pilot or wannabe (pilot or terrorist?) worldwide. A mammoth task for nowt, I think.

Perhaps all pilots should be electronically tagged instead <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

ERJ-145 - An interesting thought, if completely incorrect. The validity of a JAA licence is completely unaffected by ID, photo or otherwise.

May I refer you to my license which reads..

"The license holder is entitled to exercise license privileges on aircraft registered in the United Kingdom and other JAA states. A document containing a photo shall be carried for the purpose of identification of the license holder"

If you have ever been ramp checked in the US or Germany you will no doubt have been asked for your photo ID.

Just another useless scare tactic to be employed by our “security conscious” politicians to better track you, Ermmmm… I mean the terrorist…

As of this very moment in the (post 9/11) USA you must produce your license AND a valid state or government issued PHOTO ID to purchase fuel at the chain FBO’s as well as the independent FBO’s which we frequent during our 91 charter ops.

Also the Police and in some cases National Guard meet you on the ramp with a request for License and photo ID as well as a barrage of questions about your trip.

So the need for yet another ID/piece of paper I must carry around with me to be added to a list that included my Company ID, State issued Drivers license, Government Social Security Card, Pilots Certificate(s) and a Medical Cert. Is somewhat useless…

As for a national database for my flight times and habits, I don’t like the sound of that at all. If the government wants to review my flight times all they need to do is request either in writing or during a ramp check to see my logbook, which I carry with me at all times while on duty. Or they can contact my employer and request to review my company training records.

The photo ID on the pilots license is that big a deal with me, but I cannot see how this would deter anyone with money and a cold determination, such as a terrorist from acquiring one. Besides weren’t the terrorist pilots anyhow?

All this would be is another angle for the government to establish yet another data base for the purpose of keeping track of us serfs.

Rolling Circle questions the ID bit so wondered it any regulation buffs can point out where this is listed in JAR, and if so what is an acceptable ID?

Sorry for being cyncial guys....but photo ID or no photo ID, it's all about your "state of mind". After all, that Fedex F/O who slammed hammers into his colleagues head whilst flying would have had photo ID.....how could anyone of known what he was going to do?

So how do you know if someones go throw a wobbly? There's no way of telling. May be an appointment with a Shrink on medical renewals will become mandatory !!!!

Furthermore, and at the end of the day, if security was as tight as it should be, you shouldn't be able to get Airside at any UK licenced airfield. But then it's not a perfect world......Or have I just been dreaming. However to be fair, it's not a bad idea, it's just a matter of how it would be "Policed"
