Noticed my hard drives get very hot ........ Is this normal ?
I have two mounted above eachother in the 3.5" bays, their is an air gap between them and I have an additional case fan that blows over them .... but even with this the underside especially seem hot to touch ....
(both are 7200RPM ... which I have heard run hotter ?).

Yes, it's normal.
There was a news item last week where in UK a bloke who had been working on his laptop on his lap suffered severe burns to his private parts without realising that it was going on! That probably referred to the processor but I know that the HDDs get too hot to touch.
I've got two laptops and always use a barrier such as a large book between them and my Nuptial Tackle.
Normal operating temperature is around 45-55C. If you want to cool it down might I recommend this (http://www.overclockers.com/tips364/)

Not sure how good they are or how necessary they are unless there is no airflow around the drive.

Thanks for all the replies ....
Bought a neat combined aluminium heat sink with integrated extractor fan specially for 3.25" hard drives from Maplin .... bargain at £8 ...... very neat ..... (product code A97AJ).

The HD runs much, much cooler now ....... almost at room temperature ......
(Out of interest I looked at the Western Digital web site for my WD120 Gbye drive .... its spec had its max running temp of 60C .... that's extreemly hot to touch ..... but surley they must last longer running cool ??? must be worth spending £8 to hopefully prolong the life .... ).
