Spam, Spam Spam Spam......

Unfortunately some unscrupulous person seems to have discovered a number of private e-mail addresses, mine included. I'm pretty sure that it was via a Yahoo newsgroup.

As a result, I keep getting unsolicited e-mails from various places - mainly from b£oody Yanks - offering Viagra, so-called 'adult' websites, financial services, some stun gun thing... Does anyone know whether it's possible to filter this cr@p out? For example, by rejecting e-mail addressed to multiple addressees unless they're in you own address book? Or rejecting e-mails which don't have a return path??

I get the same problem. I get loads of crap from Korea and China these days. My Block Sender file is now so big that it takes about 5 seconds to add to it.:(

How do you block sender on Outlook though as thats what we use at work where I get lots of junk mail !!! So far i can make junk mail change colour! DOH!

Yup, me too. This is, I think, one of the by-products of the recent glut of worms. Our e-mail addresses and those from our Contacts' address books or other Newsgroups or Bulletin Boards have been spread around the world.

You can use OE "Rules" to some extent to block e-mails from certain addresses or with certains words (viagra?) in the Subject Line.

I personally send all e-mails from a Yahoo address straight to the deleted folder. But I do have a peep before emptying it in case it's from someone I want to hear from!

This curse will go away one day, but until then I'll just give them the same treatment as I give the spam that drops out of my newspaper or magazine or onto my doormat in spite of the notice on the door. Delete before reading!:mad:

I had 5 e-mails on my Outlook express. Each one was a btinternet.com address. Only one of them wasn't spammed to bits.
All come from America, peoplepc.com and ameritech.net are the domains most of them came from. I was getting quite a few so i downloaded Mailwasher in a bid to thwart it all. No such luck. Seemed too get worse after using that like they distributed the 'bounced' e-mails around all and sundry as it started to get really bad. I have now got rid of them all except one and that seems ok so far.

Doesn't seem like there is anything anyone can do to stop it. BT don't want to know and won't do a thing about it and i had one e-mail from the ameritech people saying that spam is becoming harder to control and a number of suggestions how to deal with it.
What can you do to stop it other than change your address every month or so........

I've been using the EmailFiltering (http://www.emailfiltering.co.uk) service for two months now. It is cheap (about £1.50 per month) and it works. They filter out the vast majority of spam/viruses, although the odd one slips through. I have gone from about 10-20 spams a day down to 1 every other day or so.

It seems like the bl**dy stuff just won't go away.

I had a hotmail account that used to get about 10 to 15 items of spam a day si I decided to see what would happen.
I let the mailbox fill up to its 1Mb limit, upon which Hotmail rejects all incoming mail.
I logged in once a week just to keep the account alive for a month.
Then I stopped loggin in for 2 months, so that the account was deleted.
Then I reopened the hotmail account (same email address).
Within 10 minutes the spam had started arriving again.
There must be a incredible amount of bandwidth being taken up by this spam.

Another thought just occured to me. My 5-6 year old CompuServe address is never spammed. Still used for some regular newsletters from places like MicroSoft etc.

No idea why not.

I know that Hotmail gets criticised (and spammed) a lot, but since setting the filter to 'Exclusive' and 'Junk Mail' to 'Instant Delete', I only receive emails from addresses that I have put in the 'Contacts' list. Peace!

Agree with the hotmail exclusive filter; works fine for my little girl. Used to break my heart when she'd get all excited at being informed she had new mail, then go there and say sadly "it's all rubbish". 9 years old getting the sort of **** these assholes send.

But what has happened to PPRuNe mail? I never used to get spam, and now I'm getting a few a day. Is it my contacts or has PPRuNe given up trying to fight the evil hordes?

I get the same three bits of junkmail every day (or at least until I blocked them) - don't these people learn? I do not wish to try a free sample of "Men of Iron" herbal viagra, nor boost my cellphone (sic) reception, nor, indeed, pick up a diploma.

The first person to release a easily useable trace/Denial of Service application to hit the scum responsible would make a mint. How I wish that were possible.

On this very forum I was recommended a what has turned out to be a real spam catcher. However, I was dismayed when I got it because it requires a bit of time to enter the addys of those you wish to exclude. But do it and you see them off for good.

As they come in I immediately enter their address into the blacklist and they just don't come back.

I love it, it is free and it works.

I use Cloudmark's Spamfilter and bloody hell does it work. It helps if you have broadband due the P2P nature of the service and they only have enterprise mail server and Outlook versions available at the moment. A Outlook express version is due out soon.
