For any B767 pilots out there, just interested to know why the flare is initiated at different heights for an autoland in the B767 depending on whether it is a -200 or -300. The B767 manual states that the flare is initiated at 45ft RA for the -200 and 15ft RA for the -300. Is it because of the greater length of the -300?

Not B767 endorsed but would imagine it has something to do with the length of the aircraft and the location of the RA antenna from the main gear. On the A340/330 it is located toward the lower rear of the aircraft.

benettn,

Have a look at the diagram of Autoland functions and annunciations of the B767-200 and B767-300 at page 07.20.11 for each and you will see that for the -200 Flare is annunciated at approx 45 feet for the -200 and at approx 50 feet (5 feet higher) for the -300.

pterodactyl,

Thanks for that. After further reading of page 07.20.12, 45ft RA and 15ft RA are the heights for the -200 and -300 respectively at which the A/T starts to retard the thrust levers. So while the flare mode is annunciated at approx. 50ft, idle does not occur on the
-300 until 15ft RA. Makes sense now.
