I'm fairly sure that you can download different sounds (wav files?) which can be used to notify you of different events such as new emails arriving. I'm using XP and the noises it makes are a bit boring so I want to change them.

Does anyone know how to go about this?

Cheers all.

Search for a site that has wav files - like this one http://www.pusboil.com/

Look in miscellaneous, 13th down the list for instance. Left click on it to hear it, right click and select 'save target as' to save it.

Then go start, control panel, sounds and audio devices, and select the sounds tab. Scroll down and click on New Mail Notification and the drop down box will become accessible probably with the file 'Windows XP Notify.wav' as the default sound for new mail. Now 'browse' to find the file you saved, click it and press ok. It should now be in the window. Press the little play triangle to play it, and apply or OK to keep it set.

I'm running a Win 98, P2 system.

Can anyone tell me why, when I right click on the wav file (in order to save it), the 'save' and 'save as' option are greyed out.

If I open the file, I get a full window with the sound on a slider bar, and still no option to save it. http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/whinging.gif

As always, I'm grateful for any help.
Thanks
Brian

Brian,

Most likely reason is you've got Content Advisor enabled - by accident or design (?)

Its accessible from Tools, Internet Options, Content tab. Disable it and the save as option should appear.

Thank you very much, BN http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/notworthy.gif

I recall setting the content advisor a few years ago, to stop my son visiting sites I would have done at his age!

I've followed your instructions and everything now works and saves fine.
I'm grateful for your help.
Regards
Brian
