Does anyone out there have an idiots guide to flying in and around New Caledonia? We at work have some info but would be keen to get our hands on more.

Parle vous Francais?

Make sure that you are fluent in French, as that is the language they use most of the time on the R/T. They`ll begrudingly resort to "English" if forced to, but will revert back to Frogspeak at the earliest possible opportunity.

The only airports that english is spoken is the international La Tontouta and the domestic hub Magenta. All the other towers are manned by the locals who cannot speak english. Ile des pins has english speaking controllers but refuse to speak it. You can fly there when the tower is closed or go to the aeroclub and get a french speaking pilot to come with you and do the radio work. The South Pacific Jepps has aerodrome info on Magenta & La Tontouta and for the rest again see the aeroclub at Magenta. Regional Pacific has a Twotter operating Medivacs with Ozzie Pilots so if you can find them they will be able to help.

If your over in NC in the next couple of months pop in to Avizur and there is usually some aussi pilots there for the twotter who will be happy to help you out and probably show you the local sites as well.
