There has been a lot of debate on pprune about this over the years so I suggest a search.
Simple lookovers are generally regarded as best (read cheapest) for pilots if you only need them to read plates etc. but normal unaided vision is ok to look outside for landing. Some AME's will only recommend this type.
I started off with these, but vainly thought they made one look a bit ancient, some might say distinguished. ;), so they were traded-in for full size rimless (very trendy), bi-focals but with plain glass across the top.
Have now used progressives(vari-focal to plain at top) lenses for 3 years now and wouldn't change back. Initially edge distortion is a bit unnerveing, but you soon get used to swiveling your head around to look straight-on to the target. I know my AME is not keen on them, but I pass the eye test ok, so what the heck !!
Go to an optician and ask to try them first.........they are bloomin' expensive. Bon Chance Mon Ami.
