I met someone ages ago who now flies for BM. He funded his own type rating on Citations and then got hired on this type. He flew these things for a few years before getting into BM.

Anybody know the cost of this type rating and whether this tends to lead to employment. The thing that's prohibited me from funding a type rating is that there is not much chance it will do any good, and the bigger jet ratings also cost as much as the training to that point.

I would imagine it's much cheaper doing this in USA but where?

Thanks

Up until, fairly recently this was a great way of getting cheap jet time (If you could get a job) but things changed when the TRTO thing happened, a Citation rating used to cost about £3-5K, but this has gone up to at least £9K, I got a Citation rating just before the need for an MCC and TRTO approval came about, and have since accumulated about 600 hours of Jet time (all Multicrew). I am now about to move to an airline as a result.
You need to decide whether it is still worth paying for a type rating under the new system, there is now a real shortage of pilots in the business aviation sector (I think), personally if I had the option of borrowing or spending £10k to get a job that pays £30-35k a year (as an F/O) or spending £20k which is what I think a 737 rating costs at the moment (apologies if I am in completely the wrong ballpark)to earn £45-50k a year I'd probably opt for the latter, because it would be more beneficial in the long term. The economics just don't favour this avenue any more, but as I said before, that's only my opinion. Good luck whatever you decide.
