is there much work available for CFI's in the US?
i knew there was plenty of jobs a couple of years ago, but was wondering how things are at the moment.

CFI availabilty is primarily determined by what part of the U. S. you are looking. In the Florida area, especially Daytona Beach, it's usually prett easy to find a (low-paying) CFI job.

If you want a job as a CFI I would recommend contacting some of the colleges / universities that have flight programs and asking them about job potentials. The pay isn't good, and most CFI's are only instructing to earn the required hours to get on with an airline then moving up. The key is to have a steady stream of students so you don't starve.

Just a few schools that I know of:

Ohio State University
Northwestern Michigan University
Purdue
Western Michigan
Michigan State

If you are luck enough to get hired by one of the colleges as an instructor at least you should have a steady stream of students.
