Investigators search fatal plane crash site
Accident investigators have begun combing the site of a fatal plane crash, near Canberra.

One man is dead and another is in a serious condition in hospital.

Police say the single-engine Cessna was attempting to land on a private property near Bungendore when it crashed and burst into flames at about 6:00pm (AEST) yesterday.

One man died in the crash and a 33-year-old local man suffered extensive injuries.

He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital and later moved to a Sydney hospital for specialist treatment.

New South Wales police say the plane had left Wilson's Promontory in Victoria earlier in the day.

It is not yet known what caused the plane to crash. Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators are now at the scene.

The Pilot, a grazier, was attempting to land on the strip on his home property located in the lee of the Bungendore range. It was a hell of a day for gusting winds and it would appear that after the aircraft touched down it became airborne again and stalled.

The passenger was one of the pilots best mates and the pilot is in Concord hospital burns unit with burns to 40% of his body. He lost both legs in surgery following the accident, one at top thigh the other below the knee.

His brother and sister, twins, were killed in an accident in similar circumstances on the same strip about 10 years ago.

The thoughts of many Southern Highlanders are with the family this week.
