Instead of doing a JAR ATPL(A) course just now, how about following a JAR ATPL(H) route? If you could gain employment with one of the major operators in the North Sea (Bristows, Scotia etc..) you would build up your hours pretty quickly. Then, once this situation has settled down a bit, you could convert to ATPL(A) fairly quickly and hopefully get a 737 type rating under your belt ;) (well, maybe!). Anyway, I know this route has been used by many pilots over the years and now might be a good time to do it for serious wannabes.
