A lot of people on a lot of threads are complaining about their current employment situation, i.e Virgin, BA, easyJet, Aer Lingus, to name a few!

Is there anyone out there who can stand up and say "I`m loving it where I am, it`s great, come join us!!!!" ?

The grass is greener...blah blah blah, I have a job and I'm happy. Now is not the time to moan about how management could do things better, although they could! I really feel for the guys who can't get jobs at the moment...or guys who get laid off.
Times are tough and they're going to get tougher.

I'm sorry if you feel I'm hijacking this thread. However, personal philosophy has absolutely everything to do with this thread.

What is your attitude to life? Do you go through life thinking - "When I've finished the ground school, I'll be happy." "When I've got a jet job, I'll be happy." "When I've got my command, I'll be happy." "When I get the bidline I want, I'll be happy" ..... "When I retire, I'll be happy." "When I get my handicap below 10, I'll be happy."

'Cos if you do, then you will never, ever, ever be happy regardless of who you work for - because you are treating happiness as though it were a destination.

Here's another shot in the dark. In terms of relationships, is your aim in life to get what you can from them - sex, money or otherwise? Is there a link between that and a series of failed relationships and the fact that you really can't be that bothered to make the ones you are in work any more? Do you not think that there might be a link between your dissatisfaction in more than one area in your life?

Bob Geldof said, in his autobiography, that he had to keep himself busy to try and escape from the hole he felt in his life.

Friends, we are being conned. The secret of happiness is that it is not "out there" to be got. If you want to be happy, then it starts with being content with what you have. That doesn't take away ambition - you can still work towards your jet job or handicap below 10 - just don't think that when you get there, it will make a great deal of difference to how happy you are.

Happiness is actually found in being what humans were made to be - when we correspond to our function. This may be philosophical, but discussing the question being polled above without thinking about the underlying issues is a bit like talking about the parachute you're wearing as you fall from an aircraft - you need to pull the cord.

Yes, "happiness is a path, not a destination" is twee. It is also a 95% accurate description of how the world is.

Actually, I think the thing is, that the poll isn't really asking the question you want answered. ;)

OK, to clarify - happiness ought to be the thing you are walking on, not where you are going to. Does that help?

Let's try and think about this reasonably objectively. Pilots are paid to spend most of their time sitting looking out of the window at scenery, whilst doing something that about 40% of boys, 30% of adult men and 20% of females think is one of the most exciting things in the world. Flying aeroplanes or helicopters, that is. There are legal limits on the amount of time they can work - as indeed there ought to be. They have hotel bills paid for them, food provided - free or subsidised, and allowances paid. In many cases, they have travel benefits which allows them to get cheaply to parts of the world much of the population only dreams of. Their training, whilst tedious, is structured and professional. They don't get Seasonal Affective Disorder.

So why shouldn't they be happy?!

You seem genuinely happy with your lot - I admire your honesty and understand your point of view.

However, I can't help feeling that for most people (and I include myself in that) what you propose will remain great in theory but impossible in reality. The trouble is, life gets in the way. You know that saying "life's something that happens to you while your making plans". How true.

What about the myriad frustrations that come from management for example? How can pilots feel happy if their perception is that they're being worked unfairly, to the detriment of personal and family life?

Surely this is the question that the poll asks, quite sensibly and realistically in my opinion.

Just to clear up the meaning of the poll. On hindsight, I should have been clearer on the question. Read it this way:

"Are you happy in your curent job, in relation to pay, working conditions, morale and (lack of) management?"

I also should have added a 5th answer for those unfortunate not to have a job, who I hope I haven`t offended.

Clio Toros, whilst I don't mind having a resident cynic I do object to hypocracy when you quote statistics such as "...but then only a few of our profession view them, fewer contribute..." about these forums. I am pretty sure I know who you are and if I am correct then you are the type of person who goes around in life believing that you know everything and are incapable of uttering anything that could be misconstrued as being pompous tripe. Unfortunately the majority of those around you end up humouring you just to shut you up.

You don't like PPRuNe because people on here can and do stand up to you whereas in real life you hide behind your rank and seniority whilst offending colleagues and intimidating lower ranks. You obviously don't realise this and so, when it is pointed out to you on here, or you find out someone actually says behind your back that you are a pain in the rear at work, you just spout off about how this source of information is not worthy. Hypocracy such as yours only goes to prove what a good medium we have here and I do have the statistics to counter your fantasy ones.

The guestbook which has been running for over 5 years has been signed by nearly 30,000 readers and they can, and almost always do put their profession down when signing it. Over 50% of them are airline pilots, 15% military pilots with the rest spread between wannabes or others working in the airline industry. Whilst you would like to see this website disappear and keep the job that I and the majority of readers as some kind of 'black art' you really should accept that we are in the 21st century and information technology is here to stay.

I certainly don't mind criticism of PPRuNe and in fact need it when it is constructive in order to keep improving the service. I also don't mind cynicism, in fact encourage it to balance some of the more sychophantic or 'cult' type posts but I do object to people like you making 'factual' quotes about PPRuNe when you have no access to statistics except your personal fantasy that you are somehow always right and your personal vendetta against sources that can and do show you up for the nast little person you probably really are. :rolleyes:

In my case I am 'content'...I like my job, I have good days and bad like everybody...some very good days and some bloody awful, my lifestyle is OK, I feel I am doing some good (important to me not to others maybe)...and my future is in my hands which I think may make some difference...

The day I found myself unhappy I just found another company to work for. I don't think moaning is the right thing to do. No point on moaning without trying to change things.
I have the impression that a lot of people who complain about their working conditions are the same that point their finger on the French when they go on strike to improve exactly the same.

Happiness is something far too extreme as the other flip of the coin is being unhappy. I much prefer content.

Clios made a statement that I suspect is partly true. Out of the 55,000 plus users, there is only a small minority who regularly make contributions. There are lots out in the big wide world, who like me, are registered but very rarely contribute, we just lurk around and sometimes make it the subject of conversation in the crew room and pubs. Without hurting your feeling to much, most of it derogatory.

The site is a laugh, it's makes lots of folk happy, but it is not to be taken seriously, so why does Clios desreve such vitriol?
