This is a quote from the 'Jerez 02' post that took the words right out my mouth. Unfortunately, no one has replied to it.

[quote] VFE, I know i've asked you this before but this goes to all in Jerez ...... where did you get the cash to do the integrated course??? Did you all save up for 20 years??? I'm considering going down the modular route simply because haven't got a clue where to get the cash from. I know some banks will give you the cash to do a course but didn't think they'd give you enough to go integrated.
It sounds like your all having far too much fun down in Spain so come on ....... let us know how you jumped the financial hurdle.

OK, here goes.

Been working in IT and saving hard for six years. That got me about £30,000 in savings.

Got a £20,000 professional studies loan from the HSBC.

Went the modular route, did as much training as possible part time, cut as many corners as was possible under JAR without hurting the quality of training.

I did my PPL and ATPL theory in the evening and at weekends. Did an IMC to get instrument practice in. Took an extended period off work to do hour building in South Africa. Got some twin training in SA which helped me big time when it came to the IR.

Did the CPL, IR and MCC fulltime. Moved back in with my parents up north to do this whilst the other half kindly shouldered the running costs of my 'proper' house down south.

Managed to do half an Instructors rating before the cash ran out. Now back working in IT and planning to finish the instructor rating in 2002, hopefully before I have to think about renewing my IR in September.

Total cost was about £45,000 not including the cost of living for six months whilst training full-time.

Save, beg, steal and borrow. That's how you get the cash.

Cheers!

My story sounds very similar to Foghorns, except its Engineering not IT.

Good Luck!

Must be only us engineering types who can afford flight training!!!!

Savings!? What are they???

Everyone knows how the property market has exploded over the last ten or so years! I bought a 3 bed semi, 5 years ago. Sold it this year. Now I can afford Integrated training!! <img src="cool.gif" border="0">
