From Ninemsn... what's going on? Typical beat-up? That's a long time to sit in an aircraft after you land!

Airport bomb scare causes havoc

The main gateway to Australia was shut down after a security scare at Sydney's international airport terminal.

A spokesman from Sydney Airport said emergency services were still assessing the terminal after a bomb threat earlier on Friday.

He said about 1,400 passengers who landed on international flights since the evacuation at about 4.30pm (AEST) were still on the planes.

"Auxiliary power units are assisting with air-conditioning and other on-board power requirements to help airlines facilitate their passengers," he said.

Passengers who were awaiting departure were outside the international terminal building, he said.

No international flights had been allowed to depart since the evacuation.

He said passengers should expect delays for arriving and departing international flights and should contact their airlines for rescheduling details.

Water, refreshments, blankets, portable toilets and a tent area had been set up for passengers, he said.

Martin Burgess, a sales assistant from the airport's Fish Records store, said there were about 400 people in the terminal carpark.

Passengers were being given free pizza and a few were being allowed to leave, he said.

"Everyone is kind of calm," he said.

NSW Police said major roads around the airport remained open, except for the international terminal access road off Qantas Drive.

Police also urged motorists to avoid this area to allow access for emergency services.

A NSW Police spokesman said the Australian Protective Service of the Sydney Airport had decided as a precaution to fully evacuate the arrivals and departures lounges and the entirety of the airport's third level.

"The evacuations are on the basis of a threat against the facility," he said.

A State Rail Authority spokeswoman said services were not stopping at the international terminal station.
