Sustainable Aviation Training

Hello. I am really interested in whether you have received any training in your chosen flight school on sustainability and the challenges the aviation industry is facing in reaching its 2050 Net Zero targets. Is this something that is being included in ground school? If so how comprehensive was the training? Thanks

Whilst I agree sustainability in aviation is an important point nowadays, I highly doubt someone fresh out of flight school will care enough about it when they’re desperately looking for their first flying job. So in a way any training at this stage would defeat the purpose.

I think it’s up to the airline operators to provide the necessary sustainability awareness and training.

It’s an interesting point - most airlines want to see an awareness from new pilots about their sustainability efforts and what crew can do. The thread about Single Engine Taxi is a case in point - and an awareness that saving a couple of hundred kilos on the taxi out is not only an environmental plus but will give you more thinking time at the other end if it’s needed. An awareness of CDAs, the balance between an efficient descent and energy management etc…. It’s all important stuff and great when new CPLs have clearly done their research at interview on this stuff, as it shows a really well rounded and professional approach.

Is it included in groundschool? No.

Should it be? Yes I guess, it’s important for the industry. Exams etc are more focussed on the actual safe flying of the aircraft (at least some of it, when you’re not learning how to read maps to the level of an 18th century cartographer)

Saving fuel and CO2 is important but it’s meaningless to the safe operation of the aircraft. Same way customer service is huge to an airline but meaningless to safety, so it’s not touched on.

Sustainable aviation is very much what I do for a living at the moment, and many of you may have heard me talk about it on various news media. I'm also a part time FI and hold a CPL so am familiar with the present syllabi.

Is it included - pretty much not at-all.

Should it be? - debatable, it's not a safety issue.

Should people going for airline or degree interviews read up on it? Absolutely they should. There's far more to the role than just what you learn to pass your licence.

It is already obvious that this 2050 Zero target is unrealistic and yet another buzzword for politicians to get excited about. Airline omissions in Europe this year are the highest they’ve ever been.
2050 will come and go, goalposts pushed further afield. Sad but true.

The Net Zero 2050 target is realistic. It may even be achievable with current or increased passenger numbers.

It's just not realistic if we carry on with business as usual, or expect to achieve it with the approaches currently being promoted by airliners and aircraft manufacturers.
