En route to Norfolk USA. Not sure which year but dad was at Ballykelly. Beautiful aircraft. Loved the noise of the engines as they passed overhead!

Just last month witnessed one of the occasional engine runs of SAAF Shackleton MK3 "Pelican 22" at Ysterplaat AFB, Cape Town.....you are right about the noise!

That must have been lovely to witness. Do the people at the Gatwick museum still do a yearly run of the engines on their Shack, or is that no more ?

I went to the Gatwick museum kast year and not only did they run all four engines on the Shack but the Lightning too. A great sight and sound.

There was a Shackleton engine at Taywood Engineering in Uxbridge used for building facade testing. I spent many happy and not so happy days there using it to simulate storms and even hurricanes. Beautiful thing when it cranked up.

It’s now with Vinci in Hemel Hempstead doing the same thing. Wintech in Telford have an ex DC6 motor I think doing the same thing.

I forget to include the smell of Avgas and the smell of Avpin as it started the Lightning's Avons. I had forgotten also just how shrill were the Lightning starter motors were but luckily had my earplugs.
I do not recollect wearing any form of ear protection when on 92.

Actually TW had two of them, both acquired from the Fighter Collection at Duxford. Used to make a lovely racket, that could be heard from miles away depending on the wind direction.
And the Taywood Engineering test facility moved to Leighton Buzzard, not Hemel Hempstead, prior to being sold to Vinci. I believe Stu Moxon is still the boss there.
