Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Micrea Geona.

He presented Argentina's letter of intent to become a NATO partner.

There are plenty of global partners. Both Afghanistan and Iraq are global partners. Global partners is almost completely valueless and no they cant ivoke article 5

And in addition, non European/ N american territory is explicitly not covered by the NATO text so the UK cannot invoke article 5 in the case of an attack on the Falklands.

Not sure something can be "explicitly not covered".

Clearly the UK can't invoke Article 5 over the FI or it would have done so. Out of interst, if the Canary Islands or Reunion were attacked, could Spain and France invoke Article 5? Or Hawaii and the US for that matter?

but regarding the picture of French Polynesia - I've often wondered what it must have been like to ive in some grimy mill town in Northern England (or in this case France) several centuries ago and sail to a place like that. It must have been like visiting a different planet

The book The Life of Captain James Cook by J.C. Beaglehole provides some great insight on this. Excellent book for anyone interested in Cook and Pacific exploration, but a tough read (long and very detailed). Each of the three voyages had fascinating discoveries. Let's just say that the sailors that found themselves on Tahiti after a year or so at sea were awestruck by the sights and species, especially by the very friendly and innocent women. Cook had to make an effort to not let the crew get too comfortable and on task. As Cook himself found on his third and final voyage, one can outstay their welcome.
