Morning all,

I was looking through a photo album of my father who recently passed, and found this, amongst quite a few other photos of his time in the RAF. Does anyone have a clue what this is about? It is labelled Moray Firth 1961.

Ernst Pottawenis, an early Albanian pioneer of the art, demonstrates the concept of the combined pocket towed array and magnetometer. (Note to self: next time take them out of your pocket).

Assuming you want a serious answer.
Moray Firth suggests R.A.F Kinloss. The Shack is a Mk.3. The only Mk 3 Sqn at Kinloss in 1961 was 120. The sub looks to be British, either Porpoise or Oberon class. I do not recognise the inverted gentleman. No rank markings or brevet are apparent. His uniform has a button below the belt, which suggests that either he is wearing an old pattern officers uniform or an airman /NCO uniform. His watch is on his right wrist, which suggests he may be left handed. Sea state 3, moderate swell.
Aprt from that, not much to tell.

Was your father an armourer? The photo would suggest that maybe he had something to o with the things that were dropped out of the Shack's bomb bay - sonobuoys, SUS, flares or torpedos ...

An Aircraft Photographer from memory. Never really spoke about it sadly.

Explains a lot. Making images like that was always a simple but amusing darkroom pastime for photogs.

Perhaps it was an early draft of a poster about the dangers of not locking floor hatches properly?

Actually, there are some albums for me to look through. Some Canberra ones from 8 squadron and more Shackleton ones as well as a few others I’ve seen. Already in touch with a couple of interested people. Thank you

It's obvious really. He found it a little cramped in the Shakleton and saw the submarins as offering a more pleasant accomodation ... although he'll be sad to find out that he's too big for that as well
