I read this on another site, anyone out there have knowledge of this?

quote:

from what I understand in the 50’s on the brink of a feared nuclear war the serviceman maintaining our nuclear deterrent stand by Vulcans at stations like Scampton were working unfeasibly long shifts, so long that they required ‘uppers’ to keep them functioning, this in turn left them unable to switch of at the end of these impractical shifts and needed ‘downers’ in order to sleep! The mental toll of the constant drug usage was devastating on individuals under huge pressure.

Not sure about the fifties but according to Blacksheep they were issued amphetamines in the late sixties ( I remembered reading this not long ago.)
