Radar station among English heritage list newcomers

…This year 227 historic places have been added to the national heritage list for England and there have been 239 amendments. Many places go on the list without fanfare but they are remarkable in their own way, heritage experts say.

For example, the small low-cover coastal radar station (https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1486198?section=official-list-entry) at Craster in Northumberland, with its amazing views towards Dunstanburgh Castle and over the North Sea, which this year was given a Grade II listing.Historic England said it was rare for radar stations like this one to remain intact. There are two buildings and original room fittings including a generator bed, cable ducts and evidence of power transmission.

Built in 1941, it was designed to detect and monitor the movement of German shipping and a potential invasion of Britain. It was one of a chain of radar stations along the coast and is “a physical reminder of wartime tensions and fears”, Historic England said….
