I have an RPC and looking to move into the GA world to get my PPL so I'll need to get a Class 2 medical done within the next couple of weeks before I start this training.

I haven't had one before but I'm relatively fit and healthy with no known conditions so I don't expect it to be a big deal. My understanding for a Class 2 is that the only requirement is just the assessment with no other tests (e.g. blood work, hearing test etc) mandated unless the doc is not content with the general assessment.

Assuming I don't need to do further tests, what should this medical cost these days and can anyone recommend a reasonable DAME in Melbourne. Ideally a DAME2 that can give the Class 2 on the spot - I understand CASA is taking weeks/months at the moment to issue these.

Thanks and yes I've seen that list. There are many to choose from but looking for a first hand recommendation. Maybe someone that can comment on cost and a specific positive experience.

Do you NEED the full class 2? What endorsements do you have and what weight aircraft will you be flying?

If you are fit and healthy, your GP can do the Class 2 basic very easily.

You're right - right now I don't have any need for a full Class 2 and the basic class 2 would suffice. No endorsements or planes more than 2000kg. I initially thought about only getting a basic class 2 BUT I'm still relatively new on my aviation journey and who know where I may get to within the next couple of years - regarding other ratings etc. I'm not far off turning 40 and I figured it would be worth my while getting full class 2 which right now will last 4 years. If I get it in say a year - it'll only last 2 years.

I don't know if my thought process makes sense or whether I shouldn't even bother with a full class 2 until I actually need it - even if by then I'll have to renew in 2 years.

Maybe get the full one this one last time… that makes sense as the GP one is far from free.

Positive experience ? you are either fit to pass or not ..
Cheapest DAME is the one closest to you.

haviator, disregard this clueless comment. You do have to be careful who you see these days, there are zealots amongst the DAME community. Unfortunately the fellow I would recommend has recently retired. Umair out at Gisborne was good, dunno if he's still doing it. Also, be extremely careful with the questions you answer on the online portion of the medical process. Misunderstanding what's being asked can have consequences.

Take the opportunity to get a thorough medical done. It may save your life.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't think asking for first hand recommendations was unreasonable. I'm sure there a some better DAMEs than others.

Yeah that's a good point. I haven't had a full physical before, ever. Hell, I haven't personally been to a GP for at least 15 years - fortunately I've had no real need to see a GP. I guess getting a thorough check up may not be a bad thing.

For those playing at home, just got my Class 2 done by a DAME who issued it on the spot. It was a relatively simple and straight forward process and cost me $150+GST.

Had initially called other clinics and some wanted to charge $300+ for what ended up being a 20-30min examination. Doctor was easy to deal with and he said he'd done 4 other medicals today before me. Would definitely go back to see him in 4 years - hopefully he's still around.

I had called up a couple of doctors that were recommended on here (Dr Nick Page and Dr Vince Galteiri) but both have retired recently.
