Fellow PPRUNERS how do you tell the difference between a Boeing 767/200 and a 767/300,
Also, is the easiest way to tell the difference between a 737/300 and a 737/400, that the 400 has two emergency exits mid way down the fuselarge as compared with one on the 300 series?

The window exits work ok... 1 on a 733/762 and 2 on the 734/763.

Otherwise, the 300 just looks longer! :D

The 763 also boasts a tailskid.

Lancer, don't some 767-300's have that extra full size door just in front of the wing in place of the dual wing exits?

Okay...here's the short answer;

The -300 is longer than the -200! Simple.

As for the exits, I thought they both had 2 small o/wing exits?

Anyway, the US registered 763's had to have the 2nd main door fwd of the wing for FAA requirements, rest of the world was satisfied with the o/wing ones.

Best way to tell a -400 is the raked wing tip. ;)

As mentioned before, the easiest way is the overwing exits!

Also, (with regards to the QF fleet):

OGA-OGV: -338's, 2 overwing exits and GE engines (white cowlings).

ZXA-ZXG: -336's, 2 main doors fwd of the wing, 4 doors in total each side with the 3rd being an emergency exit only. Rolls Royce engines (grey cowlings). These ones came from BA, hence the differences.

EAJ-EAQ: -238's, 1 overwing exit, P&W engines (white cowlings). And the fuselage looks unnaturally short compared with the tail/wing size!

Generally most 763's around the world have the 2 o/wing exits instead of the 4 doors.

The only standard way to differentiate a 767-200/300 is that the -300 always has a tail skid.
737-300/400: -400 has 2 overwing exits each side and also has a tail bump snubber below the rear fuselage.

Thanks for the replies, to further add to the original question what is the story behind the all white 767 (VH-BZI i think, there may even be more than one without the red tail) with only QANTAS logo's on the forward fuselarge. Am i right in saying this is a 767/300?

'Tis an ex AN 763, that was never really used in anger by AN. On lease to QF from AWAS, I think. Why spend money on paint when the A330's are coming.

Bush Tucker Guy. I believe the 767/200 is bigger then the Cessna 150 and smaller then the A380!

The other all-white QF aircraft is VH-NOA I think - they're both wet leased by AWOPS to boost capacity.

The internal structure is quite different as well, galleys look identical, but will not change between aircraft, mouning hardpoints are all different! engine strut design is different!,

I don't think it's too hard to tell the difference. Distance from wing root to fwd cgo door, or windows, depending on config. I guess you need to be a plane-spotter!:p

Yes the -300 is longer but the easiest way to tell from a distance with out a sibling to compare with is via the tail skids as the number of doors and overwing exits are dependent on the configuration specified at the time of production. QF -300s don't have the doors forward of the wing;the 'Falcons' with the RB211s do; AN -200s RML & RMK had two overwing exits; the rest had one.
