Commercial, older design, some upgraded instruments?

Bit industrial so maybe 1945-60?

4 engined

Looks American to me

Are we looking at a Carvair with up dated instruments.
I remember seeing "Plane Jane" at Willow Run in 1991.

A nose Heater! Smacks of a first generation radar nose. Four jets and windows not resembling Douglas heritage. Convair 880?

thnarg
14th Jul 2023, 10:48
Looks like there was a hot air connection to the nose for airframe de-icing, or was it just a freight deck heater? Was the wx radar was mounted under the windscreens?

Any retired BAF, Ansett etc posters out there able to add anything?
8 out 21 destroyed in crashes is sobering…

I think the nose heater was for anti ice. With a blunt front like that I think it could pick up quite a lot of ice.
We are waiting for confirmation of the type from MARK9263.

Consensus seems to agree it’s an Aviation Traders Carvair, Mark. You’re welcome!

this photo is mirror reversed. of a B757/767. The differences would be seen on the overhead panel. Your B747 is B742 3AP/FD or B743.

BAC One Eleven, not sure what series, no FD108 flight director.
May be a 510ED, the BEA ones had a different FD and a Decca where the blank space is in the middle.

A bit of a giveaway, since both types featured here in the same post on this very thread just a couple of days ago...

Is this thread not some sort of a wind-up?

Last time was a 767 but that’s a 757, and the altitude and speed suggests they’re behind schedule…

It's been a while now, but I think there were several parked at Gainesville Texas. If not, then they were something very similar

There is certainly one stored at Gainesville Municiple (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@33.6484619,-97.1937686,316m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en&entry=ttu). N89FA, formerly G-ASHZ/Fat Annie with British Air Ferries, I think I recall her as the one I saw flying at "Injun territory" altitude over Kenley Aerodrome around '76 or '77, presumably enjoying a VFR bimble back to Southend from somewhere "out west". Looked and sounded marvellous... I know I saw "Plain Jane" performing a feat of levitation from 08 at Gatters a year or so later - think she also went to the US and was written off.

Not flown on PPRuNe for a while, but noticed the CARVAIR thread :D

Our group does indeed have one, well the Cockpit anyway, :8, recently saved from the bean can man, and now residing very close to its birthplace near Southend.
Those interested can see our site at www.carvaircockpit.co.uk
Its quite a task we have, but things are progressing.
