Mid-air at Oshkosh 29/7/23

Sadly two people have died in a RotorWay Exec 162 after a collision with an ELA Aviación ELA 10 Eclipse autogyro over the airport - the RotorWay wreckage landed on a Mooney, fortunately unoccupied. The Eclipse crew were seriously injured. I presume both were opearting in the vicinity of the Ultralight strip...

Earlier in the day, a T-6 crashed in Lake Winnebago while manoeuvring (presumably aerobatics), both crew died.

Very bad day for Oshkosh. It seems to me [after 6 visits] that it is attended by a lot of pilots who can fly well, and others..........Seen a fatal collision there myself.

I flew to Oshkosh once. Having done that, my subsequent visits have been by surface means. The day we flew in, a demonstration pilot killed himself right in front of us, and delayed our departure for hours, as the airport was closed. Oshkosh is a very experienced aircraft show venue, and really enjoyable, and I'm happy to not stress about flying in, and just enjoy the displays....

As I understand it ( had already left OSH when it happened) those 2 accidents yesterday occurred outside of the OSH “controlled “ area. The UL procedure has changed this year and apparently one of the 2 did not follow the NOTAM , as to the T6 , above the lake , not really directly OSH related .
I fly/flew ro OSH , and if one reads and follows the NOTAM and its procedures nothing happens ,the last collision between 2 aircraft attending was in 1974 when radio was not mandatory. Seen the number of aircraft attending , flying in , landing incidents accidents are bound to occur but all in all it is relatively safe to fly in for an average GA pilot .

On the airshows ( the ones done by professionals) the last years i attended ( 2017 and 2019) it was pretty close sometimes, this year it was totally different , only one set of aircraft at the time , lot of blank times between the aircraft shows , “ safe “ maneuvers, no cowboys anymore like Jet Waco, Sukhoi 110 , or some private military jets . I wonder if this was the consequence to the B17 crash in Dallas last year.

I had left by Friday as well. The rotorcraft fly out of the ultralight field - and from the post-crash footage it would seem this is the case. That seems OSH related to me. They have scheduled times of who flies when at the ultralight field. The times are posted on the ultralight "tower."

Not airshow related, if that is what you mean.

The pilot of the AT-6 recorded her first solo on type back in May. Only 30yo, she was the daughter of a successful NFL athlete who's entire family flies. She was attending OSH with the aircraft to promote a WASP movie and took off from the airshow five minutes before the crash

The gyro responsible for the mid-air was an ELA 10 Eclipse being piloted by a sales rep who was doing demos and apparently had been previously warned about performing 360s. Expect a lawsuit there.
