Well, today I went and did it. I kicked off my CPL(H) modular course. It will be tight, flying weekends with a week or two consolidation at the end especially with the weather turning.

However, when flying this morning, the amount of stuff happening was enormous. Yes, I know I should already have it down pat, but there you are.

Does anyone know of a book with more or less step-by-step instructions ? Something along the lines of an instructor's patter manual ?

Why ? If I can come home of an evening and talk myself through what needs to happen with all sorts of things, it will help me. Any help much appreciated - email me if you wish.

Unfortunately I don't know of any books UK specific...... but a manoeuvre (US) is a maneuver (UK) whatever the language!!!

You may want to get further information about the R22 Training Guide from Helicopters Only (http://www.helicoptersonly.com/index2.html/en-us/dept_3.html) under the training section.

Alternatively the US Practical Test Standards (http://asa.nwfirst.com/cat_chek.htm#PTS) Private & Commercial for Rotorcraft/Helicopter is published by ASA it outlines all the individual maneuvers that must be performed and to what standard.

Well. I'm back.

I've had no joy finding anything in the UK like wot I 'ave been looking for.

What I'm after is something already written which I can use to talk myself through all sorts of things so I can get sequences of actions in specific manouvres clear in my mind so in the aircraft it becomes automatic and I can develop the finer judgement rather than having to use expensive time developing the remembering skills. Does that make sense ?

Anyone got more ideas ?

Slightly off-piste, but an idea you might find helpful. When I've instructed student QHIs in the past, some had plenty of trouble "pattering", particularly with a new aircraft or techique (which sounds a bit like the difficulties you are experiencing).

The connecting the talking to the action is an unusual skill - so - sometimes I would get them to practice it with a familiar set of actions - brushing teeth - tying shoes or whatever.

Once you've developed the "pattering" skill on a familiar (already) learnt action, you may find it easier to apply it to the action(s) you are learning in the way you want.

Best done in private in case people think you've gone mad!

I believe "advanced drivers courses" often do something similar....

Thanks for that. The commentary while driving is a skill I was taught many moons ago, but no longer need or have anyone to impress with it so it's scarcely used.

Looking around at what's available there also seems to be some disparity between what I hear and do in the a/c ( have a guess, ends in R22 ) and what the books say - I'd rather write my own from scratch if there is no alternative but if there's something which fits the bill . . .

Any ex- or serving beefer got a copy of something I could have a gander at - liquid thanks available, and it's not like I'm a million miles from MW.

If you do end up writing your own, it would be nice if you can aim to have it published sometime in the next couple of years. By then I might have enough dosh to be able to do a mod. CPL(H) course and having some decent reference material to practice with would be a major help to me and those in my position.:D
