Starting this thread as a guidance for people... If you weren't planning on a career in New Zealand in the long term and were favoring more towards Australia would you recommend to skip the NZ ATPL exams and proceed with the CASA ones when the time comes?
as someone going through the CASA conversion, do the NZ one, less exam = less cost

Where do you expect or hope to get your first command? Do it there.
I don't know what the whole expiry story is these days, but no reason you can't make a start on a few in NZ. Worst case you have to redo them on expiry or moving to Oz, but that's hardly going to be the biggest challenge you'll face.
