Hello guys I would like to ask your ideas about working in Taiwan as an Expat Pilot

Does anyone join Taiwan company recently e.g. China Airlines / EVA / Tiger / Starlux ?

What do you think about the contract since it is only 3-4 years ?

Do they terminate the contract once they get enough local pilot ? >> Like whats Bamboo is doing now

Thxs

HOPE YOU GUYS GET A GOOD JOB

I have a friend in EVA, he joined in 2020 and is enjoying the company so far.
What I heard is that EVA didn't layoff anyone during covid so it's probably a company to go for
You can check the EVA website for the recruitment information, my friend applied through an agency anyway, he says it's a lot faster

Hi, becareful about coming to EVA though. Failures and termination halfway or during intial training very high. You can ask around for the truth. Medical check very thorough and strict. You get blood test every time medical check. Not laying off pilots might be true but termination during training also true. hahahaha.... ask around.

how many years from FO to command in EVA?

Eva expat pass rate is about 75%, the main reasons for the fails are bad english and bad attitude, enough chances and extra training is given if needed.
No layoffs during covid like they did in the past, but the salary has remained the same since 2016 falling behind all airlines within the same category, 5.5k USD after taxes for FOs, no extra hours. and perdiem is 3.3usd per hour.

I will be honest
The good:
Professional training, Great aircraft condition, great experience to build CV, somewhat relaxed day to day operations, upgrade to Senior first in 3.5 y and capt 4.5 to 6 years, chance to fly 787, 777 or 321.

the bad
Mainly the low salary, no consideration for long commuters, interaction with cabin crew is horrible, basically 2 different worlds. locals get more days off per month on average. flying there is like a 9 - 5 job and you live in a student like room, not suited for families of more than 2 and even so.

the reason many pilots are leaving are the low salaries. mostly going to emirates, qatar and etihad, some others go to US.

Eva is great if you are making less money or have no job, but right now there are many options out there and you can definitely make more money anywhere else.

spot on about the 75% passing rate for new joiners. so think again.. would you leave your current job 100% and come here to take the risk of being terminated ? we are pilots and we always said SAFETY first. hahahaha.

How about EVA and APAS. Apas contract is 4 years. Is there a big difference from being direct hire from EVA and getting hire with APAS?

After 4 years. What happen after? How to get upgrade for SFO, or PIC? Thank you

It was 3 years back then, dont know if they changed it to 4. that means you are 4 years behind all local guys that will upgrade faster than you, for example an MPL with 150h total time at your date of joining will be upgraded first no matter if you have more experience or the same time in the company, their senority starts from the date they pass their ab initio interview, yours not.

after that 3.5 year period you will be offered and upgrade to SFO (about 500$ extra a month for you to just to save the airline money if they had to put a real captain there) on the same fleet and stay there for about 2 years (you will seat behind all locals with less experience than you), then maybe you will get the interview to upgrade to PIC on a smaller fleet like A321, fly there 6 months and be transferred again to 78 or 77

I'm way too old, but does anyone know whether Starlux hires expat pilots? If so, how is the culture there? Young FO relative of mine is currently looking for an expat job on Airbus types.
Any info appreciated. Thanks.

[...] interaction with cabin crew is horrible, basically 2 different worlds. [...]

Can you elaborate on that one?

Are you referring to the language barrier (i.e., communication isn't possible)? Or are they looking down on you? Or is it like in other Asian airlines that Pilots get their hotel, Cabin Crew is in a different (cheaper) hotel and basically you are on your own everywhere?

Thank you for the insights!

if you dont have a job, then you have nothing to lose. otherwise stay put. you might not be up to their "standard" and get termination halfway during training. i am talking about all of them in Taiwan.

Maybe I can provide some insights, working in CAL Taiwan, salary around 6.5-7k USD with 5usd per diem. Expat pilots will get a commuting roster with 8 days consecutive off and free return tickets to your home country, provided it is CAL destinations. Accommodation allowances will be provided along with market allowances (basically to cover your living expenses). As for command opportunity, standard 6+ years. As what others mentioned in this thread, the operating mindset and training here is drastically different from other part of the world. Communications with cabin crew indeed close to zero, typically you won't even know who you're operating with! Overall, it's relaxes daily operations once you get used to the working environments.

APAS does not offer a contract, they only help you with the application that's all. And now it's all 4 years contract. I attended one of their roadshows recently, they gave some insights on the screening as well

Yes, average is 5 years, to either 777 or 787

So lets say someone joins as FO B787, this person becomes CPT B77/78 in 5-6 years, correct?
