Italy reveals plans for converting Gulfstream jets

ROME — The Italian Air Force plans to convert two Gulfstream jets (https://www.defensenews.com/air/2018/01/24/italys-second-gulfstream-early-warning-aircraft-takes-flight/) into electronic attack Compass Call variants (https://www.defensenews.com/global/europe/2022/10/07/italy-eyes-us-style-compass-call-electronic-attack-jets/), with an option for a third, a source with the service told Defense News.

The jets are to be converted from six Gulfstream aircraft Italy already has on order, with the remainder to be converted into early warning variants, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press on the record…..

If the U.S. approves the deal, it will enhance the capabilities of the Italian Air Force’s 10-strong Gulfstream fleet (https://www.defensenews.com/global/europe/2020/12/02/italy-lays-out-plans-to-buy-up-to-eight-new-sensor-loaded-gulfstreams/), which stemmed from the 2012 acquisition of two jets in the Conformal Airborne Early Warning format from Israel Aerospace Industries.….

Italy also cut a deal in 2020 with the U.S. to obtain two more G550s for signals intelligence in a standard dubbed Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Electronic Warfare.…..

Seems to be quite a mishmash of variants?

Aircraft labelled 'Swedish Air Force' and 'Italian Airforce' G550 have spent many hours flying along the Nato borders and Romanian coastline without landing for sometime now. Perhaps they are 'trials' or maybe already in service?

3 G550 variants will be in service with the AMI:

CAEW
CCCD
JAMMS

A very capable and credible ISR force, although CAEW tends to overheat and will be the only one with non-US origin mission equipment.
