suspicion is that Russian airlines are cutting corners with safety and seeking to operate ageing aircraft without proper maintenance following tough Western sanctions over Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

This 26-year-old plane operated by charter company Azur Air was en route from Phuket International Airport to Moscow when it was hit by the drama.

Passengers on board included families of men hiding from Putin's mobilisation decree.

Some had left their men in Thailand - seen as a 'friendly' country by Russia - amid suspicions of a new round of conscription.

Other men were returning to Russia after running out of money, despite the fear they could be mobilised in a feared new forced recruitment drive and sent to the front.

The images and footage shows the frightening twin problems on the plane which had a total of 321 on board.

'Airline technical specialists have already started work to eliminate the malfunctions,' said a statement from the Russian airline.

Perhaps there's more to the story but the video in the linked article seems to show a typical turbine stall of the #2 engine followed by an uneventful RTO. I didn't see any evidence of exploding tires during the RTO.

RA-73034 is currently en route from Phuket to Vnukovo, so seems to have been fixed.

It was interesting - while enjoying curry and Singhas - watching the way that ATC coped with holding 7 inbound aircraft. Random holding patterns and the Jetstar 787 after holding for a while did an approach and go around before going back to hold a while longer.

321 people on a 767-300? Wow! What's the seat pitch, 20 inches?
BTW, I'm with BFS - if that's really the video it looks like a pretty harmless engine surge and RTO - no "catches fire". Typical garbage reporting.

Azur's B763s are 8-abreast @ 31-32" pitch.
