Westjet cancelling European Routes

Surprised no one has commented on this. Westjet have cancelled all Europe flights from Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver from now and for the whole Summer.

Caused about three minutes wailing and gnashing from prospective passengers. We were booked to return Amsterdam to Vancouver late Feb. Not sure if that will still go but we had to cancel for health reasons.

If the surge of travel wanting public continues will there be price hikes all round for lack of capacity?

Reason given, shortage of staff, especially pilots.

Probably because us here in Australia and NZ don’t care what Westjet in Canada is up to🤔

I care as this trend is starting all around the world and will continue progressively affecting ticket prices, availability of flights and ultimately the demise of many airlines.

Plenty of flights are being canned in OZ because a shortage of tech crew and cabin crew.

Dear ChrisVJ, the Westjet cancellations was reported and commented on a short while ago in either the LGW or LHR threads.

I think Westjet also had a thread also in Airlines Airports and Routes.

Yes as Brits, we were very disappointed and surprised at the news that WestJet, despite their large launch a few years back in 2016 on the Gatwick Glasgow Manchester and Dublin runs (and to other airports in Europe) have now left the 'party'...
They decided to abandon Gatwick in the main, and move over to Heathrow.

I think there is just now seasonal flights (Canada - UK flights/peaks was always, and still is very seasonal) with Air Transat and Canadian Affair Holidays (their Tour Operator)

Canada's holiday airlines flying to the UK have come and all gone, all the time -

Normally began flying as Charters, either as Affinity Groups from the 1960's, or ABC from the 1970's.
Most were short lived charter airlines and quickly went gone bust, others like Wardair, were lost due to Deregulation takeovers and mergers.

Here in UK and Europe during the summers from the 1960's we saw 727, 707's DC-8's CV990A, 747s, DC-10s, then later came 757s, 767, Tristars, A310's, A330s' of -
PWA, CP Air, Wardair, Nationair, Quebecair, Ontario Worldair, Nordair, Transair, Worldways, Ports of call Canada, Crownair, Holidair, Harmony, Air Club International, Minerve, Odyssey, Royal, Canada 3000, Zoom.
Many UK charter airlines also flew the seasonal routes to YYZ YVR YYC YEG YOW etc

Westjet was probably the first Canadian Independent since Wardair to introduce a full scheduled service, also with Premium class seats bookable on the Canada - UK routes.

and Air Transat is now the only survivor.
