Witness reported it as circling and then nosediving. Weather was cold with freezing fog.

Years ago there was lots of spirited debate about sad occurrences like this. Right or wrong, speculation or not i learned so much from these debates in my early flying career. I would run through scenarios looking for the swiss cheese, applying it to my own flying. It made me a better pilot. That debate seems to have gone now, and lots of new pilots wont learn anything from awful events like these. RIP poor lad.
