Embraer E-Jet series Yaw Damper

Hi all,

I have some questions regarding the Embraer 170/190 series aircraft, in particular the Yaw Damper.
I have noted that the aircraft has a Yaw Damper push-button on the Flight control panel (FCP).
Does that mean that the Yaw Damper must not be engaged for take off and landing?
Also, is this type of yaw damper coupled in such a way that when it's engaged, the rudder pedals are locked out, or do they operate normally despite yaw damper engagement?

I have operated several jet aircraft, some where the yaw damper is something that you engage during pre-flight until power down. In others it's engaged, and disengaged with the autopilot, meaning its prohibited on landing.

The Yaw Damper is on without Pilot input during power-up. The button is to switch it off if need be.

You still have Rudder authority while the Y/D is on. I've not been on the E-Jets long but I've noticed the Y/D is lazy compared to other Jets.

I guess it only goes off in non-normals, when instructed by the QRH?

Btw, is the E-jets certified for Autolands? CAT 3b?

Been on the 190 over 10 years. Only time one’s pressed the YD button is when you are in the sim and have to reposition whilst airborne. Doubt Embraer added it for that purpose but you never know ;)

Yes the 190 can autoland, if equipped appropriately. You get the YD function without the parallel rudder though, don’t confuse the two?

Hm, not sure what you mean?
There are different types of Y/D systems, some which couple directly on the same cables and pulleys connected to your pedals (cheaper system, as I understand, and for simpler small jets, like the one I currently operate)
Or like in my previous, the A320, where you don't feel the Y/D operation. Pedals not locked out, and not moving in response to the Y/D.

But I think that has been clarified in this thread.
The Embraer E-Jet series has a more sophisticated Y/D system, much like the A320 where you still can press the pedals and keep the Y/D engaged during Take off and landing.

E jet's rudder control is Fly By Wire, normal system behavior is that the Yaw Damper is always in, as V 2 says, if it wasn't for the Sim, I wouldn't know where the button was. E175 and E190 E1's Autoland and now E195-E2s can as well.
