NW doesn't fly LHR-IAD. What they are probably offering is KLM codeshare via AMS.

As for the others, it depends which class and what's important to you. VS is a 747, which some people dislike, and Y is reportedly cramped. BA is a 777, United 767 or 777.

My preference would be the 767, specially if you are in Y (2-3-2 is a better config than the others.)

YMMV of course.

320, If time of arrival /jet lag is a factor plz remember that UA/BA fly this route 4 times per day. VS flies it 1 per day.UAs early morning departure ( 8am) in generally empty, loads of room to spread out. The 9 am return from IAD is equally as empty. Both are flown with B767 aircraft.

If in anything other than Y, then the choice is simpler, I would suggest.

If in Y, my only reaction to the 2-3-2 of '6' is to say that the '6' never seems to have enough lavatories and I try to avoid the '6' for long haul.

If I have to be in Y, my choice is to always try and take a daylight, out and back. Then you do not have to try and sleep in the small seat. I would take a daylight in a '6' to a night in a '4'.

Although they take up a day, you arrive home in the early evening, having worked and read on the flight, ready for a meal, a drink and bed.

If it's someone else's time [i.e. me being paid] daylight

If it's my time [i.e. squeezing every minute out of my holiday] redeye :D

Problem with 767 is it is slow. Flew IAD-LHR once on a 747-400. A 767 left 30 minutes before us. We were on stand at LHR when the 767 touched down!
