Whilst on its way to Farnborough the HP Herald prototype suffered an uncontained engine fire that resulted in a forced landing and the aircraft destroyed. Would anybody be able to add any detail as to exactly what happened?

When I joined Air Anglia back in '78, Capt Hazelden was the Aberdeen Chief Pilot. He took this newbie under his wing and taught me a huge amount about flying the F27 and flying in general. I had a 40 year flying career, and I still maintain that Hedley had forgotten more about flying that I have ever learnt. He was on No. 1 ETPS course in 1943. That means he was a test pilot three years before I was even born!!

Works for me though the address line as viewed in Chrome says its unsecure.

If I recall aright, a few years ago there was a good article about the Herald in Aeroplane Monthly which covered the accident in some depth. Landing site at Milford was just a couple of miles from my school, though I wasn't even a gleam in my parents' eyes at the time. :)

Not working for me either, I get a '403-Forbidden' message when I try that link.

Some facts here, but not the full story:
https://www.baaa-acro.com/crash/crash-handley-page-hpr-7-dart-herald-100-godalming
https://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19580830-0

Edit: I tried Firefox and Safari, but both browsers are refusing to play along with the link above. Is it somehow restricted to UK IP addresses only perhaps?

The part: "(sussexhistoryforum.com.uk)" must not be included in the adress. If you delete that part, the link works fine.

That part is not within the link, only in the text shown in the post (hover your mouse over the link and you'll see the address 'hidden within' at the bottom corner of your screen).
I have tried Googling 'Sussex History Forum' but if I then click on the first result, which should go to the main page of the site you linked to, I get the same result as before:

There is a brief report (and photo) here, which should be accessible to all:

https://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19580830-0

Wasn't this the one that was originally fitted with four Alvis Leonides Major engines?

That's a pretty comprehensive write up of the story, with some great photos!

Thank you all for the links. I always considered the Dart bullet proof, but not on this occasion given what happened.
