Little known reasons for the downfallThe back-breaking causes of fall, apart from four lethal air crashes during the last 30 years that include Kathmandu A-300, Multan Fokker, Hevellian ATR-42 and Karachi A-320, another list of five completely scrapped aircraft during last 10 years includes, BHJ (ATR-42) aircraft landed off the runway during cross-wind landing at Lahore and declared scrapped, BHP (ATR) skidded off the runway at Gilgit and scrapped, and BKW (bigger version ATR of 72 seats) became out of control of Engineering personnel during Engine Testing and scrapped.

Strangely, one BHN (ATR-42) aircraft has been dismantled to provide parts to other aircraft due to shortage of parts owing to procurement procedures intricacies. For imagining the loss, a smaller ATR-42’s market price is around 15 Million US$ and an ATR-72 price is around 25 Million US$.

Further, 98% of PIA Aircraft Engineers are Not Graduate Engineers. They are Apprentice Mechanics who got certifications through technical courses and recognized by Civil Aviation as aircraft engineers. 75% of employees have got their children employed in PIA. Even, a few have got all of their children employed in PIA.

The biggest loss to PIA is that high yield ethnic Pakistanis of North America and Europe have started travelling by Gulf airlines and biggest advantage PIA has is direct flight option

Its time to recognize the irreparable damage by prolonged confines of Public Procurement Rules since 2004 that proved to be 2nd nationalization and broke the backbone of the spirit of sourcing and supplies and wreaked havoc with the serviceability of aircraft, airport equipment and onboard supplies.

These rules have limited the supplier numbers and have given the selected ones so much of leverage, they go and seek stay orders at will and hardly leave PIA. These rules should be simplified to the extent of open bidding and sufficient Bidding Time by amending PIAC Act and nothing more. In the interim, the purchasing department must be de-centralized into engineering purchase, catering purchase and airport handling purchase for prioritized supplies.

Well written post and I can fully understand and appreciate your frustrations regarding PIA, let's hope that they can get out of their current situation.

The biggest downfall of PIA is and always was corruption. Constant bailouts by successive governments were deliberately plundered and given away to friends and families of so called chief executives who have and had no interest in helping the airline. Everything you have mentioned in your post is very accurate, however these are sadly all symptoms of the main cause, and that is decades of corruption and embezzlement. Even recently a tender was put out to upgrade some 777 interiors and to develop an indigenous IFE system. That money was awarded to a so called company with absolute no experience in this sector. Guess what, the money disappeared.

Alas the country is corrupt. Until merit and competence takes control over grace and favour. Screwed. It is not the will of. it is the choice of.

Last flew PIA in early 1970s in First Class aboard a DC10. Service, food and champagne all excellent.

Have a business trip coming up later this year so tried to check flights out of KHI westbound long haul. First airline website that I have needed to complete a captcha to get into! Got through that only to find a somewhat less than easy site to navigate. After a number of abortive attempts to get a price and possibly book, gave up and booked with EK.

Although it will add a couple of hours to the flight, not concerned as it is a night flight, and will have time to get a full nights’s sleep, and will have all the champagne that I need to assist with it!

unless you were going to Toronto and willing to do the internal sector up to Lahore aswell your search would have been pretty much in vain to be honest
Manchester Birmingham Heathrow and Paris are on a rather dodgy Jordanian airbus (I say dodgy it’s in Shaheen colours and it was itself banned for regulatory maintenance issues prior to transfer to JAV)!

Any evidence to back up what you are implying?

Agreeing with 787Heaven.
Two late 1970s PIA horror flights Tokyo-Beijing-Islamabad-London. Memories of.
PIA used to be called ‘Perhaps I Arrive’ and I began to understanding why. (Not all was bad though. Some amusing and pleasant experiences too.)

Refer aircraft service record during usage with Shaheen and Shaheen ban from the UK before the general exclusion of Pakistani airlines .Plenty to read from reliable sources.

Now don’t get me wrong on JAV in particular they may have done their own due diligence however how they overcome prior maintenance issues and probable documentation irregularities I don’t a quite know - hence the dodgy tag!

Right now I am more than happy that the Manchester operation is temporarily camped at a certain ex military establishment for another few days .

I would be more than happy if PIA were to be closed permanently on safety grounds alone
